This presentation will highlight benefits of camp experience to individuals living with autism and their families.  Participants will learn why they should consider sending children and adults to a summer camp, what to look for in a camp program, appropriate age to send a child to a camp, realistic expectations and some funding resources.

Presenter:

Steve Nkurlu

Formerly:  Director of Recreaation and Respite Services

Currently:  Graduate student at the University of DE, consultant at Easter Seals

After nearly 12-year career at Easter Seals, Steve recently resigned his position as Director of Recreation and Respite services at Easter Seals to become a fulltime graduate student at the University of Delaware.  During his tenure at Easter Seals, Steve worked with families and different agencies to provide recreational services to individuals with disabilities across DelMArVa Region.  One of these services was to have an autism-specific program at Camp Fairlee Manor where children living with autism have an opportunity to enjoy a camping experience while parents receive respite from caregiving duties.  Steve continues to consult with Easter Seals and Camp Fairlee Manor while pursuing his hobbies of being outdoors, traveling and International Relations.

Audience:  Parents, family members and professionals
